The Ridges Sanctuary receives donations from ATC and WPS FoundationThis winter, the Ridges Sanctuary received two generous grants from the American Transmission Co. (ATC) of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Public Service Foundation. The Ridges will use the funds to advance its new strategic plan and maintain existing facilities. “These generous grants will start our campaign to support The Ridges' 2008 -2012 strategic plan focused on land preservation, education, outreach and research,” said Ridges Executive Director Steve Leonard. “The Ridges is undertaking a number of critically important new initiatives. This spring we’re starting several citizen monitoring programs to inventory our lands and reaching out to more audiences with our education programs. We are in the process of collaborating with UW-Green Bay and other universities to address research initiatives. We’re also facing some unavoidable infrastructure costs, and the support of partners like ATC and the Foundation has become more essential than ever before.”
ATC owns and operates the high-voltage transmission system that delivers the power supply in portions of Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Illinois. ATC is the first utility company to receive the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ prestigious Green Tier designation. Green Tier recognizes corporations for exceptional environmental performance and practices that go above and beyond requirements of the law. The Wisconsin Public Service Foundation, incorporated in 1964, is a private, charitable foundation that supports charities and organizations that need financial assistance. The Foundation is funded by stockholders of the corporation, not by Wisconsin Public Service electric and gas customers. The Foundation provides nearly $1.2 million annually in contributions to programs that support activities in the areas of arts and culture, community and neighborhood development, education and life-long learning, human services and health, and care for the environment. “We are deeply grateful to the
Wisconsin Public Service
Foundation and ATC for their support,” Board President Ed Pentecost said. “The
Ridges is committed to expanding its work in environmental education, critical
ecosystem research, community outreach and preserving irreplaceable wild lands.
For years we depended on the faithful support of our members and their
unflagging generosity. But today, with the demands of these essential new
initiatives, we will depend as well on the help of new partners. With this gift,
these partners are making a significant contribution to preserving Door County’s
natural assets.”
We're Celebrating our 70th Anniversary!
2007 marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Sanctuary! From its beginning as 30 acres of land leased from Door County, the Sanctuary has grown to over 1,600 acres of diverse natural areas. We offer educational programs throughout the year, as well as sponsoring research activities, conducting special events, and working as stewards to protect the incredible flora and fauna of the Ridges. To celebrate this milestone, we've printed a beautiful poster, with artwork by Ridges member Marilyn Mahlberg. The poster features Trailing Arbutus, one of the earliest flowers in the Sanctuary, with text that reads "The Ridges Sanctuary - Seventy years protecting this special place - 1937-2007." It's printed on heavyweight paper, measures 11"x14" and is available from at the Ridges office, or from our online store, for just $20 including tax.
Changes to Ridges By-Laws Last spring, an ad hoc committee was formed to review and update our current bylaws. A number of changes were recommended and adopted at the Ridges' Annual Meeting on October 6, 2007. Two major changes were adopted: changing our fiscal year (currently September - August) to the calendar year, and moving the Annual Members' Meeting from October to August. Complete by-laws are available here.
2008-2012 Strategic Plan is Complete! For nearly two years, the Ridges Board has been developing long-range goals and strategies needed to achieve these goals. Numerous organizations and members have given us input and suggestions thus far. Progress in the planning process has been described in recent newsletter articles (Winter 2006-07, Spring 2007, Summer 2007, and Fall 2007). At its December meeting, the Ridges Board of Directors unanimously adopted the Strategic Plan for 2008-2012. This plan outlines the Ridges Sanctuary's mission, vision and values, and will guide staff and Board members in programs of land preservation, education, research and outreach.
